Appearance:
Desheno is a beautiful boy. He has golden blond hair without a hint of curl, that's a little long for Candidate, but due to his age, no one complains. He has a rather square face, with a determined chin, and a strong jaw. Lips that jut out with some force, and an aristocratic nose, long and large. His eyes are a baby blue, soulful and kind rather than imposing. They're set behind high cheekbones, and under large, straight eyebrows. His ears are well shaped with nice lobes, and hug his head, not sticking out like one of his brothers. Generally, he's smiling and happy, and always willing to offer a hand or a laugh, and he looks good natured.
His body is tanned, and large, with muscles that are firm and well shaped, neither bulging like a Smith nor lean as a Runner's. He can haul a sixty pound bag of firestone with easy, and can run a fair clip without breathing hard, but he's excellent at neither of them. His hands though, well his hands squared and neat and nimble. He can dice, slice, carve and decorate. Like many of his extended family, cooking is something he's naturally talented at. And that's something Shen's proud of, and while his hands are generally a little cut up and are occasionally burnt, he takes care of the nails and cuticles.
Being merely a candidate with no real important friends(well, his Aunt is the Headwoman, but he knows better than to try and take advantage of that), his clothing isn't particularly nice, but what he does have, he takes care of. One of his cousins, and a friend is an apprentice Seamstress, and is more than willing to practice on his clothes in exchange for treats, so he's always well groomed. He also makes a point of taking a bath every morning. He's not naturally a morning person, and the water helps wake him up.
Though born and raised in Igen, even he gets effected by the heat occationally. Thus, he wears light loose shirts and shorts. It's not like he has anything to be ashamed of, with tanned sturdy calves and firm(also tan) thighs. And even if he did have something to be ashamed of, he'd probably still wear clothing like this.
Personality:
Shen isn't clever. He isn't a biting wit, or a inspiring speaker. He isn't a charmer, or even a good dancer. He's clueless and naive. But he is the kindest, sweetest man you're ever likely to meet. He's the kind of guy who'll help you finish your chores, and ask you about your day, serve you dinner, and then give you a massage.
Unfortunately, while he's the kind of guy who'll always have your back, he's also rather child-like. He believes that everyone is as kind as he is, even when they show that they aren't. He can't understand running from something that terrifies you, or ever acting against what is right. When his foster brother left to become a Healer after Thread started Falling, even those he hadn't reached the end of his Candidacy, Shen didn't understand how Kervas could do such a thing. Kervas' explaination that he didn't want to serve himself up to die as a Dragonrider was hardly helpful. Now, to keep from having to think to deeply about it, he just figures that Kervas is going to be a Healer, and that he'll fight Thread that way. The idea that his Foster brother was a coward never factors into these thought. Shen could never think of his brother(or anyone else) in that manner.
For him, death or suffering or pain doesn't matter, so long as he's helping someone. Of course, he's never really suffered all that much, so maybe he'll change as he ages. A leg or arm eaten off by Thread might change his tune.
While he would prefer to be a Dragonrider, Shen isn't too sure he'll Impress. His father was a Dragonrider, true, but he's getting older and no Dragon has ever shown any interest in him. Shards, his younger sister at least had a Green or two look her over, and she was on her first Hatching! However, becoming a Cook(Maybe even a Headcook, although in the Weyr male Headcooks are rarer than Queens), has it's own appeal. Cooking is a reward into itself, but feeding the Dragonriders who guard the land from Thread is icing on the cake.
Generally, he lives in a world rather different than the average person. Instead of growing out of his ideals, he lives a sort of fantasy that everyone is good, and just. And he lives to embody that ideal. And while that makes him rather boring to spend a lot of time with, he's decent at cards and he'll spend a good deal of time trying to make you feel good, so people like him.
The fact that he's pretty but doesn't make much of himself doesn't hurt. Not that he's any good at picking up girls(not even the relatively easy Weyrgirls). Of course, that he rather wishes himself a relationship like his parents(Weyrmates from the first child to the day his father died), with mostly monogamy and lots of children, and the ability to say hello when they pass each other in the halls. Not that he's ever been able to get with a girl who feels the same way.
He's also rather clueless about Holders and Crafters. For him, the Weyr's way is the worlds way. That even different Weyrs have different customs would be a shock to him. And he doesn't know how to deal with shock. In fact, he's pretty clueless most of the time, and while he tries to always say the right thing at the right time, he's messed up pretty bad quite a few times.
He also can't dance- he's too worried about stepping on his partners feet and ends up off beat. And fish makes his eyes water, and his skin to turn red and swell.
History:
Shen had a decently normal childhood. He was the first born of a brood of ten(including the Fosters), and grew up hearing his father and mother tell him that in the Weyr life was good, and fair, with space and work and food for everyone. He was taught to be a fair older brother, and was babysitting at a young age. His mother and father loved each other, rarely fought(Mainly because his Mother didn't care about any Flings his Father had, so long as they were with other Dragonriders, or not inside the Weyr, and partially because they lived apart, and had a standing policy to leave anytime they started to feel irritable- Shen does not know about either of these agreements), and provided him with an idylic childhood, and an ideal for relationships.
He grew up to be strong, and good looking, and to want, very much, to be a Dragonrider, just like his strong, good looking father. The young man also wanted to protect the people of Pern, much like his father did, and he wanted to be witty and adorable, and have a Weyrmate that he loved very much. Well, one of out four isn't bad, especially since he's still young.
Shen got into far less trouble as a child than most of his playmates, as he wanted to show his father that he knew what was expected of him. Consequently, he never formed bonds of friendship over stolen bubbly pies, and he never achieved the favoritism that he craved. The brother born after him, Nienat, was a right Hellion, but achieved the love and scolding of the cooks, and the creche workers. This is a feat that to this day confuses Shen. Adults had always told him that the bad boys were bad, but it seemed to him that adults loved those children best. And that they still do, even know that they are grown. Even as a child, he was considered second best, and that grates on him. He responded by being sweeter, better, nicer, kinder, and he's still second best. For once, he'd like to see himself finish first, but that's not an articulated wish.
Shen thinks that he's satisfied with his life- A candidate, except most of the time he doesn't take classes, since he's been taking them for seven turns, and all of his chores revolve around the Kitchen now. He's got the assurance of a life if he doesn't Impress, and a shot at Impression(at least two more shots, maybe three if the new Queen is one of those Gold's that have started rising more often), and being a Rider who defends the world.
Sure, he's dull, and staid, but he's a solid friend, and should eventually grow up. He just needs a push or two.
