Sanzia really doesn't have time for pets
Appearance:
(Face Claim, Olivia Wilde)
Sanzia has naturally pale skin, darkened by the harsh Igen sunlight. Despite only spending a very small amount of time outside of the Lower Caverns, the woman's skin is deeply tan. Her hair, a brown so dark it appears black everywhere except under the sun, is shoulder length, beginning the day with curls that flatten out after a long day of work into a straight clump.
Her eyelashes are similarly dark, and long covering stormy gray blue eyes. Her eyebrows are high, arched, and very narrow, moving expressively as she speaks. Her high cheekbones frame a direct nose, and her lips are a pale pink that go well with her dusky skin.
She's of average height, standing at 5'9", built slim, but having gained weight and a decent chest after years of birthing babies. Her stance is strong and in control, and her voice is deep from years of bellowing in the chaos that is the Lower Caverns. She's also fit, and is more than capable of working as a ground crew member when needed(though, as Headwoman, She rarely finds time to do so).
Personality:
Sanzia is one of many Igenites irritated about how the fate of Igen was decided. She does not enjoy the fact that all of the Igen Bronzeriders have been shipped off, and new ones, with different ways, and manners, and leaving all of the old Igen traditions to be forgotten. It was hard enough to lose both Queenriders of Igen so brutally, and so quickly, and while Sanzia is more than prepared to like and assist Quinn, she wishes that she could have kept, at the very least, the Wingleaders who survived. Not that she was really consulted about Dragonriders, being only a Headwoman(which stung, quite a bit), but it doesn't keep her from wishing that, when it comes time to help the Weyrwoman record Clutches from her Queen, that the sire could have been one that she, herself, had seen hatched, and could trace the Bronze's lineage back deep into the Weyr's past.
Then add all of the missing faces(more than just the Dragonriders, of course, as every Weyrmate whose mate was leaving left with them, and many who lost much of their family left as well), and Sanzia's Weyr was one of low morale and little staff. It was not the ship-shape Weyr she had inherited eight turns earlier.
But mourning about the change in the Weyr's dragons does not change that Sanzia is the Headwoman for a large sized Weyr, and must, at least, make it look like everything is running smoothly. And while Sanzia is better at ensuring everything is working well than raising morale, she's learning the other trade quite well. She's also learning about every extra skill her remaining Weyrfolk have, because she needs those skills to make up for missing Crafters or skilled amateurs, at least until the replacements she's begged for out of every Weyr or Hold that might hand over more people.
She's not a one on one type of person, working better with a group dynamic, and her ability to delegate is phenomenal. The only thing she excels at in one on one settings is seduction, but as consolation, she's very good at that. Sanzia is the last person, however, you want to go see for a shoulder to cry on. Tears make her tense, and crying makes her awkward, and while her general personality is sunny, helpful, and strict, crying men or women leave her truly uncomfortable and rather unhappy.
She talks enough to be understood, and gossips, rarely spreading her own gossip unless she has a very direct reason for sharing it, but always listening, and trying to spot problems before they become problems. She even has one grandmotherly older woman who is perfect for those Weyrfolk who are going to have a meltdown at any point, and fixing those problems right away.
Sanzia is also a very good cook, like much of her family. Thus, she finds it nearly impossible to eat food that is not well prepared, and avoids cooking lessons like Thread, fearful of being asked to taste test. Her gag reflex is strong, and avoids seeing Healers in their own quarters, because while blood isn't a problem, puss and vomit are. This is also why she refuses to drink more than a single glass of wine. Hangovers really aren't worth it. Ever.
She loves children, and enjoys being pregnant(the fact that she never experienced Morning Sickness might be part of it), and has a large brood. Because she can't show favoritism towards all of her children(only the ones who prove themselves worthy of it), she spends enough time in the creche so that she can know all of the children, including her own. She was planning on giving fostering a try, as Headwomen often Foster older children, but after the disaster of Thread, has decided to wait another turn or three.
With her rare friends(mostly her family, and close friends of ex-lovers), Sanzia becomes Z, or Zia, and cuts back, relaxes, and enjoys friendly banter. While she can't discuss work, or co-workers, she can gossip about any Dragonrider who isn't a Ranker, what the temperature of Pern is, and what's going on with the Creche. The self imposed limit of what she can talk about sometimes separates her from her friends, but it helps keep Sanzia fair, and that's what she really cares about. She's the rare exception in that she can be trusted to take a few minutes off to calm down and keep sane. She even takes a vacation every few years. Seeing the previous Headwoman, and the younger Junior Weyrwoman age much faster than normal had taught her the dangers of overworking herself. Besides, even the lowliest Drudge gets a few days off each Turn. Why shouldn't the high and mighty Headwoman do the same? Especially when she can commandeer a Weyrling and go to the ocean, or to a grand Major Hold celebration. It would be pure folly not too.
While she has plenty of lovers, she hasn't had a Weyrmate since her the father of her first daughter Impressed a Brown and they both parted amically. She really just hasn't met anyone worth all of the little of her free time remaining. Actually, that isn't strictly true- she met a Wingleader and a Wingsecond, both Bronzeriders, who she might have considered, but the amount of awkwardness that would ensue had one of them become Weyrleader kept her from ever being willing to play with Bronzeriders.
She has high hopes for her relationship with Weyrwoman Quinn, being closer to Quinn's age than she was with either of the former Igen Queenriders. She also hopes that Quinn isn't a silly chit like some of the Queenrider's she heard of.
But mostly she's too busy to think, or do anything that isn't related to the running of her Weyr.
History:
Sanzia was the first, and last child, respectively, of both of her parents. That her mother was a good ten years older than her partner didn't bother anyone in the Weyr, and the fact that she was her father's first child meant that she got a little more paternal attention than the average Weyrbrat. She also got, if that was possible, less attention than usual from her mother, who had helped to raise her first four children, and to whom, the fifth child represented nothing new except an especially hard pregnancy. From her mother, she got a proper Weyr upbringing, with not even a Birthing Day, or Turn's End gift, and an extreme difficulty in even recognizing her mother. Her father, in contrast, showered her with presents and attention up until the birth of his second child, after which, his attention slowed and even stopped. It seemed the novelty had worn off, and his new Weyrmate was far more interesting, and thus, so was his new daughter.
At that point, at eight turns, the damage had already been done. Sanzia was a dragonmad 'brat, who loved loved the shock of Between, and the smell of Dragon Oil, and the windbeaten profiles of Dragonriders. She loved flying, and exploring, and traveling. She even tried to run away with the Tithe wagons after it became clear her father would not be taking her flying anymore, and the only way to travel was by land.
After being soundly punished for trying to run away, and after it had been discovered she only wanted to leave because of wanderlust, she was advised to wait until she was older, and send off to help bath the Dragons. And that was what she did until she came of age to be a Candidate. But like most people in her family(one of her half brothers being the exception), she did not Impress. And the older she became, the more she was pushed to decide on what she would spend the rest of her life doing.
Like most of her family, Sanzia had an aptitude for cooking, and thus, she began training as a cook. In her eighteeth Turn, as all thoughts of Impressing began to lose any hope, she met a Holder turned Candidate named Wan. And she liked him, and he liked her, and in the fashion of Weyrfolk before, they became close, and she became pregnant. Sanzia gave birth to her first daughter, Zian, and contemplated moving out of the Candidate Barracks as she was nineteen, and fairly sure she would never Impress. She chose against it, and continued to attend her candidate chores as a Cook, along side the man who she would pick as a Weyrmate should both of them fail to Impress. Unfortunately for that plan, Wan Impressed(Becoming W'es in the Process), and headed into Weyrling training. Neither of them intended on waiting for the other, and while they wish each other well, they are no longer close.
This point of her life is one of the few that Sanzia isn't exactly proud of. While she discovered she couldn't drink, that didn't keep her from attending every party offered, and attempting to be the life of all of them. She had no foreseeable goal, no real future besides cooking, and no boys or girls she was interested in. It wasn't until she, through the sickness of her senior cook, was given charge of Candidate chores that she discovered she had a knack for keeping groups working. She could sense slackers, and goofers, and had a talent for saying the right thing, at the right time.
After a few compliments about actually getting candidates to be useful, Sanzia found herself commanding candidates in the kitchen. And then in the storerooms. And while scrubbing dragonhide. And she liked it a lot. And when one of the many assistants offered her a spot managing, Sanzia jumped at the chance. And for once, she was actually happy with what she was doing.
Being one of many assistants was a good place for the twenty two turn old, and as the turns, lovers, and babies came on, she found herself moving up, finally, at twenty eight, reaching the position of main assistant. It was a miserable, life draining job that required everything- but offered everything. If she lasted until the Headwoman retired, she would be the Headwoman. And she could taste it. Being the Headwoman would make up for every missed chance to travel, and the inability to spend time on having a real Weyrmate, and seeing the children that she valued, and wanted time to know and love, only rarely. To be the one in charge, to be validated for every hard choice she'd ever made, well, it would be worth it. It would even be worth never Impressing, because she was going to take care of the Weyr for the next thirty years, if she just survived this miserable hazing.
And she did.
After two turns of having scarcely time to eat, the former Headwoman, Kelzi, retired, leaving a thirty turn old Sanzia in charge. And Sanzia did everything she could to keep the Weyr running in tip top shape, while determined to make sure that she did not end up like the former Headwoman. Kelzi was only in her sixtieth turn, but exhausted, and had run away to Ista to play at being a Holder Auntie, to hide away from anyone who would try and make her be in charge, ever again. It didn't hurt that an old 'special' friend of Kelzi's also lived in the same Hold, or at least, that was the rumor.
It took five turns before Sanzia had the Weyr running to her satisfaction, and 'coincidentally' five turns before her first seven-day vacation. That was the highest point of her life. She had several beautiful and intelligent children, her career was right where she wanted it, she wasn't close to the Weyrwoman, or to the Weyrling Queenrider, but both respected her, and they had an excellent working relationship that would probably last the rest of each of their professional lives, if not, perhaps, beyond that.
Sanzia remembers that turn with some yearning, as after that, everything began to go down. It started innocently, with a simple crush on a Wingleader that she crushed ruthlessly. Then came the speculation about Thread that had been building most of her life, and the terrible sandstorms, that were echoed by fires, avalanches, and even earthquakes in other sections of Pern. And then finally, Thread came, and torn everyone apart.
When both Queens died, it fell to Sanzia, as the senior female in the Weyr, to be the Weyrwoman. It was outside of her training, and she's sure she made mistakes in everything from what she promised as punishment to what she said to the tithe trains when they arrived. Thankfully, all of the domestic punishments that she was sure to have fouled up no longer matter because no one from Igen is in Igen anymore, but she's just as glad to be 'just' a Headwoman again. Trying to work with the old Weyrleader had been difficult. But he's gone now- every dragonrider was gone for several days, in which her entire crew of cleaners attempted to clean every reachable weyr. Unfortunately, a few weyrs are only accessable via dragon, and whoever begins to live there will have to deal with those problems their own way.
And now comes the invasion of every other Weyr into sacred ground. But Sanzia's dealing with it, just as she'll deal with the new Weyrwoman, and anything else life throws in her path.
