Name: Chedari
Gender: Female
Age: 17 Turns
Orientation: She's not sure... Hasn't given it much thought.
Rank: Candidate
Family:
Father - Chedest - 48 Turns - Master Beastcrafter @ Keroon Hold
Mother - Sholari - 43 Turns - Wife @ Keroon Hold
Brother - Chedel - 25 Turns - Journeyman Beastcrafter @ Bitra Hold
Brother - Sholest - 23 Turns - Journeyman Beastcrafter @ Igen Weyr
Brother - Aridest - 20 Turns - Apprentice Beastcrafter @ Keroon Hold
Brother - Cheshol - 18 Turns - Apprentice Beastcrafter @ Keroon Hold
Appearance:
While growing up in Keroon would normally have not made a difference, it tended to when Chedari's father was a Master Beastcrafter and her four older brothers were all into the profession. Raised playing games with her brothers has left her body muscular, though her petite frame has somehow managed to keep it almost feminine. While she may still lose arm wrestling matches against her brothers, she can beat them in any foot race with her well muscled legs.
Her hair is kept cropped at her shoulder length despite her mother's pleas for her to grow out her locks to attract a husband. While she might love helping raise the baby herdbeasts and runners, she plans on staying far away from having any children of her own. The longer men see her as an equal and not as a lady the better in her opinion. She does not look forward to hitting them over the head with the nearest farming hoe.
While on a rare occasion she might allow her mother to dress and doll her up for a gather, Chedari always has her pair of loose slacks underneath so she may ditch the dress as soon as possible to return to the footraces against the boys in the field. Rarely found in footwear besides her running shoes, there really is no passion greater for Chedari than running like one of the many runner beasts for the sunset across the field.
Personality:
While her mother attempted to influence her as a child, it is quite obvious that her four older brothers had more of an impact on the youngest and only daughter of the family. Chedari was raised to be very active and as such she knows she can keep up with any man in a foot race and put up a decent fight in a wrestling match. With such knowledge comes a certain amount of pride as well as arrogance. Thankfully her arrogance only shows when someone calls out that she can't do something - because of such it's also rare to see her back down from a challenge.
Despite her mother's attempts to make her a lady, Chedari had a very happy childhood growing up as an equal to her brothers. Because of such she is a very optimistic and generally happy person. She's quick to smile and quick to laugh. Always ready for a good time and always ready to make new friends.
Chedari does have limited experience with other women. She's not sure what to expect from the women of the Weyr, if they will be like her mother or if they will be more like herself, active and equal to men. Either way, she knows the Weyr is where she wants to be and she's not ready for anyone to tell her otherwise.
When it comes to men flirting with her, it has yet to happen. She had grown up always surrounded by her brothers, and as such she had a certain amount of protection from the lustful eyes of men. She had not thought it might be any different at the Weyr and I guess we'll have to wait and see how she takes it.
Chedari's work ethic is sort of lopsided. If she sees the gains in it, she had no problem working - nor does she have a problem working anything with physical labor that would be termed by her mother as "men's chores". She will not, however, take kindly to being given the chore of sewing or cooking. She came to the Weyr to be away from her mother's terms for women and she plans on staying away from such terms. She is going to be a dragonrider, damn it, not a drudge - or worse, a wife!
Chedari really is naive even for her age. Beyond the fields with her brothers, she really doesn't know much of the workings of the world. She's never had any real order or laws laid down for her and she's never had any real contact with a great number of people. The Weyr will be an interesting wakeup for her.
History:
The first and only daughter born the last child to a Master Beastcrafter, there was a certain amount of status that came with Chedari right from the beginning of her tale. Her mother had great dreams for her daughter, because while everyone can raise their status a little bit in the world with hard work, she knew her daughter would just have the luck, beauty and grace to be able to rise above all and marry the next Keroon Lord Holder.
Chedari's mother had her doll to play with in her new baby, dressing Chedari up in little sundresses with cute little shoes and flowers in her hair. Then Chedari learned how to walk and instantly discovered the joys of the outdoor world. Her mother's dreams of Chedari in perfect sundresses died that sevenday as the little girl played with every mud puddle and bug she could find. It was not long before she was tormenting her mother by bringing mud pies and rock stews into the house to slop across the rugs.
By the time Chedari turned six, her mother gave up trying to keep her clean and sent her out for her brothers to keep an eye on her. Each of her brothers, having had only other brothers thus far, instantly felt the need to protect their little sister. Trying to decide how best to protect her, it was the littlest Cheshol that piped up "Why not teach her to be a boy, then she'll be able to be as strong as the rest of us." Well it made sense to the older boys.
In conspiracy against their mother's dreams, they dressed her up in Cheshol's slacks and one of his shirts. They taught her to run, play ball and wrestle. They had such fun playing tag with their littlest 'brother' and Chedari didn't see how she was any different from them. The turns went by with her keeping up and soon passing them in their foot races. Her mother was horrified.
Chedel and Sholest were the first to start going to work with their father to become apprenticed to the Beastcrafter hall. The younger three missed their lazy hours with their older brothers, but found themselves content to still perform physical feats (in their eyes) for their own entertainment. Their imagination was soon to be sparked, however, when it was announced that Keroon would be holding the next Gathering.
The gathering was more than the younger children had ever hoped for, a magical world and boy did they explore it. Chedari had turned 12 only a few sevendays before and that morning she had found her mother explaining to her how important it was that she kept her new dress clean and acted lady like while at the gather. Chedari nodded and agreed to all of her mother's rules to make things move along faster. As soon as her mother's back was turned, however, she was dashing through the crowds in search of her brothers.
They spent a good portion of the day in wide eyed amazement watching acrobats handspring and juggle through the crowd before racing off to watch the wrestling matches, all three joining there shouts and whoots to the crowds. It was another short dash to watch the competition of swordsmanship and another jog after that to find their older brothers in the Runner races and breeding shows. Their heads were so full of imagination and their limbs so worn out from so much running and mimicking of what they saw that soon Chedari and Cheshol were both passed out before the harpers started up their ballads for the evening entertainment of dancing. Their older brothers made sure to let them know how much they had missed out on.
From that day on Chedari and Cheshol found themselves with new inspiration for their antics in the fields. Aridest had begun going to the Beaster Hall as well, but still found a few hours to spend with his siblings. They spent hours laughing over their handstands and springs. It did not take them long to find branches and whittle them straight before they started their swordsmanship as well. Chedari never much liked the bumps and bruises she picked up from that latest challenge, but the handsprings and cartwheels became a favorite of hers along with their continued footraces.
There lazy summer days were soon slowed again as Chedari found herself standing in the doorway of their home watching the last of her brothers heading toward the Beastcrafter's Hall. Again she pleaded with her mother why she couldn't go with her brothers and learn the family craft and again her mother explained to her that it was not lady like, and that it was about time Chedari grow up to realize her place would be by the side of a man as a wife, not as a compainion. With her coming of age, it was impossible for Chedari to hide the features that marked her clearly as a young woman and not as a man. She hated it.
Begrudgingly sitting down to her mother's lectures and 'dolling up', Chedari found herself dressed once again in ribbons and lace that she could have sworn her family couldn't afford. Cooking and cleaning bored her to death and when her mother demanded that she learn needle point as well, Chedari gave up. Lifting her skirts high, she ran out of the house, joining the runners in the fields again. It wasn't fair, life was not fair to women, to keep them penned up in silly dresses and refusing to let them run and romp with their brothers. Men and women were not so different in anatomy and she knew for a fact she could keep up with her brothers!
Chedari ran and ran, until the rain began to fall and then she ran further. Out where she knew none would find her, she finally fell to her knees, wondering where on Pern she could find herself treated as an equal to men. For she knew fair well her brothers had never minded her alongside them. Why would other men feel that she should be forced into a dress sit boringly at home while she wait for a supposed husband to come home?
The wing of dragons practicing drills in the sky above her gave her the answer she sought. For they let women ride dragons, granted it was usually the smaller green dragons or very, very rarely one of the giant golds - but they were held equal were they not? Just imagine, being able to fly! Chedari was fast enough to beat any man at a foot race, surely she could keep up with the demands of a dragonrider given the practice.
It seemed almost destiny as thread fell that turn, thick and heavy, decimating their world and the Weyrs taking such heavy losses. It was a horror that left her mother shaking and calling out that Pern was doomed for the Weyrs had grown soft and surely they could not recover their numbers. Chedari, however, found herself dreaming of fighting thread on the back of a magnificent green dragon, or riding a legendary gold dragon who would - despite her mother's pessimism - return dragons to the world in vast numbers. Either way, her eyes were continuously turned skyward.
Her two brothers made a visit back to their home that sevenday to tell their mother the great news that their father had a horrible time of keeping quiet about - they had walked the tables. While a great majority of beastcrafters tended to stay here at Keroon where the vast breeding stocks called for their numbers, both older brothers had been stationed outside of Keroon.
Chedel was to be sent to Bitra Hold with a new string of yearling Runners and herdbeasts to strengthen the bloodlines there in their harsh mountain climate. Sholest let it be known that he was to go to Igen Weyr with the tithe train to restock the Weyr and watch the herds thereā¦
"But I thought Igen was disband after their losses, surely a tithe train isn't being sent to an empty Weyr!" - Mother
"Of course not mother, they are reopening it with a new queen from Fort Weyr who has already laid one golden egg and has a reputation of strong, healthy clutches. They are bringing riders from all over Pern and the rest of the Weyrs to reopen Igen and make it stronger than it was before threadfall." - Sholest
A strong queen with healthy clutches and who had laid a golden egg before! Chedari could not keep her dream inside herself any longer. "Please brother! If you have any love for me at all, take me with you! I want to see the Weyr, see the dragons and the queen! I want to stand candidate and impress! Please brother, I'll work hard and you know I can keep up with the Tithe Train!"
The entire family was taken by surprise by this outburst, her mother and father most of all as they gave themselves nervous glances. Instantly everyone was shouting - her mother and father about how it was absolutely NOT going to happen - her brothers excited and enthusiastic about her decisionā¦ As you can imagine, it made for a very loud night with everyone bickering one way or another.
Eventually her mother put her foot down that, NO she was NOT going with Sholest to Igen Weyr. The next morning seen otherwise as she caught up to her brother who was overseeing which beasts were being picked to be sent to Igen. Packing her few belongings with the train, he set her to work with the other men. Her father, found her out though, just before the train left. To her surprise, it was to give her his wishes. He understood she was never meant to be a proper hold lady as her mother wished and that she was allowed to go only if she would take the dress her mother sent him with and promised to not ruin it and to write often. Sholest was then given instruction to keep an eye on her and soon they were on their way.
