The day began like any other for Kalarue. When she arose, she was promptly bathed and dressed by her own tiring drudge. Her hair was then set in a jeweled golden net to keep her red hair from falling in her face. Breakfast was served promptly at eight in the morning. Often she was the third to breakfast, her uncle and aunt always seemed to get there first. Her cousins were next to arrive in varying order.
Avriskai would often start up conversation while they ate. She would go on about one thing or another and often times her uncle looked as if he could not wait to be out of the room. Women's topics were of no interest to him. Kalarue had learned long ago, he preferred women to speak only when asked a question. That did not mean he would be angry if they spoke when they wished, simply that he would not listen well to what was being said. Lady Oransis was the patient one. She often asked questions and invited more from her eldest child.
For herself, Kalarue often did not mind the conversation. Avriskai had always treated her like an older sister will. They had always been good to eachother and despite her cousin's vain attitude she generally looked up to her. When Oranso spoke it was often to the point and short, something that Kalarue admired in him. He was sharp minded and brave. He was her favorite sibling and everyone's favorite of the children really. Kalarue might be the quiet one which many of the drudges appreciated but Oranso was the golden child. He could do no wrong here. It must help being next in line for the Hold.
After breakfast she and her "sisters" were given lessons. They ranged from running a hold, to sewing, to manners, reading and penmanship. Kalarue was good at most of those things though she was admittedly better at penmanship than at sewing. She often bled on whatever it was she was sewing and would beat herself up mentally for being unable to sew a simple stitch which of course only made things worse.
After lessons the girls had time to go to their rooms and freshen up before lunch was served. It was often light on the stomach and lasted only half an hour as uncle always had something to do. Afternoons were not completely free either. The girls would often excersize by riding their runners for about a candlemark. Sometimes they would be together, sometimes not but they always had an escort.
Today, Avriskai was not feeling up to riding so Kalarue went with an escort. One of the Hold guards. She didn't mind being followed. When did Rue mind anything really? The afternoon was lovely especially for high reaches. It was late spring now and the weather was just getting warmer. Warmer was not warm however. It was cool enough that anyone from a more southern place would be cold but warm enough that it was not freezing. She still wore the sweater her aunt had forced on her before she went riding. Kalarue was hot but the cool air against her hot skin felt wonderful. the sun beating on her pale face was glorious and she reveled in the beauty of the day on runner back.
She thought it could not be better than this as they headed back to the Hold. Rue noted a commotion as she rode towards the stable. Looking to the guard, he came up beside her and told her to stay mounted for the time being. He asked a stable hand to take his runner and inquired as to the crowd. "Dragonriders." The boy said with a wide toothy grin. The Hold Gaurd came back and helped her down from the runner. "We best get you inside my lady. A Search party is not something you'll want to be missing." He made sure the runner was taken care of and led her into the Hold, clearing her a path.
When she walked into the main hall it was quite the scene. Lady Oransis stood, smiling graciously at the dragonriders, of whom there were three. Two men and a woman in leathers all equally weathered in appearance and all very interested in the youths before them. No one noticed her until Oransis motioned for her to come stand next to her cousins. "And this is Kalarue our second daughter." Which was how she was described to outsiders. Oransis always treated her as her own anyway. Too bad Oranso was not there nor was uncle but they were probably going to arrive at any moment.
"Lord Dorvett and Oranso should be arriving at any moment. May I offer you something to eat and lodging for the evening. We have no guests with us at this time and have plenty of wonderful rooms available to you." A Search party at High Reaches would always be treated with the respect dragonriders deserved.
