Appearance:
Kalarue is tall and slender at 5’11” and much taller than her cousins and aunt. She has long legs and a small waist. Her body has small breasts and little to no body fat. Her skin is a pale almost ivory color that burns in the sunlight but is looked for in Lady Holder’s. Unfortunately Kalarue will never be married to anyone of that stature, her mother’s indiscretion made sure of that.
Stunning in person, her face is oval shaped with high cheekbones, small comely ears and an elegant nose. How can a nose be elegant? It ends perfectly longitudinally from the bottom of her ears, the nostrils come out only slightly on each side and the top of her nose does not bend backward at all nor is it overly forward. Her eyebrows are the same red of her hair. Not strawberry blonde and not chestnut red but flaming fire red. Her lips are rosebud shaped and generally dark without needing any enhancement. Against her pale skin it is quite the contrast.
Sadly all of her nice features, including her midnight blue eyes, are lost on her. Her face holds next to no emotion as she has locked her truest self from view. Of all her uncle’s regrets one of his worst is that she has not become the person she could be because he has made her fear what emotion can do. Her eyes are often mirror like, expressing what little they can. Rue is considered a rare beauty as not many on Pern have that shade of red for a hair color. Her mother had red hair but it was a darker almost chestnut brown, red color. The generally consensus is that her father must have been light haired.
Kalarue is used to wearing the best of the best and always what is proper for a lady. Dresses and gowns can be stuffy but she is so used to wearing them that they no longer bother her. The most annoying part of an outfit are the shoes and though she has large feet, they do fit into the custom made shoes all the Holder’s children own. She just feels so uncomfortable in them that when she is alone she prefers to be barefoot. Apparently her mother never could stand footwear for long either. (This of course makes her determined to wear them pain or not)
If she were ever to try on pants she may like them but for now all she knows are fancy dresses of many hues and fabrics.

Personality:
Sometimes the past haunts people in ways that it should not. It is so with Rue. She tries to make up for her mother’s mistakes by being the perfect lady. She is quiet out of subservience to her aunt and uncle. It is because of this that she has trouble saying no to people. It is as if the will was taken out of her. Her passionless life is reminiscent of a dragonrider who has lost their dragon only she has no idea what it is she is missing. To her this is how life is. Her uncertainty in herself is probably her greatest undoing. Confidence is a hard thing to come by and she has none in herself.
Unable to let loose for fear of emotions ruling her she keeps herself on a tight leash. Even the most tightly wound things must come loose eventually. When that day comes perhaps her true personality will begin to shine through the mask that she lives behind. She tries to help people where she can but often she finds she has no idea what to do to help. The things she is best at require no training, only compassion. She is a quiet shoulder to cry on and often a great confidant. She would never tell gossip about anyone and would prefer secrets stay secret. Kalarue never lies.
Gambling and excessive drinking are vile to her. Lewd behavior is also not accepted in her mind because of her mother she is even more turned off by such behaviors. She finds it hard to see faults in others but constantly finds them in herself. Other people tend to like her despite her naïve ways and limited views. Her favorite pass time is reading though she is a fair singer as well. Not good enough for the Harpers even if she were a boy and her options more open she would not be good enough for that. For her own family in the evenings, it was just fine though. Honor is a big thing for her. She would never do anything to dishonor anyone she cared about. Rue is much to practical sometimes for someone who is only fifteen.
The most recurring thing in her personality is her unending kindness. The drudges love the shy girl with the sweet laugh even if she was born almost as commonly as the rest of them and perhaps that makes them more apt to like her in general. She can be sweet to the point that other people dislike her though. Her cousins often tease that she is a brown noser. Animals seem to like her because she is calm and quiet though she has not been permitted to rider runners for fear that she would do something incredibly stupid like her mother. In fact her whole life has been restricted so that she has limited life experience. When she finally sees the world as it is and not the little corner of it she is used to, she will be in for a rude awakening.
History:
Dorvett was a young Lord Holder when his father died unexpectedly at age 31. The youth was only 14 and was given supervision by his ninny of a mother. The woman was incompetent and had passed on certain traits of her to her very beautiful daughter, Kaskata. As much as Dorvett loved his sister, she made him concerned with each passing day for her well being. She was an incorrigible flirt and often drank more wine than was seemly. Most would say she belonged at the Weyr but Dorvett, knowing how women of their status were needed to make good with other Holders refused to give permission for her to go.
Unfortunately Dorvett could not watch her all the time and so he had to go about not giving her what she wanted, freedom to do what she pleased. As the Turns passed he tried looking into marrying her off but somehow his pretty sister was not pleased with any of the men he came up with. Instead at the age of twenty he married Oransis, the daughter of a Minor Holder in Telgar. She gladly moved to High Reaches to be with him and become Lady Holder. Oransis and Kaskata quickly despised one another. Kaskata was wild and Oransis liked order. He often found himself in the middle of some battle he did not know was going on, nor did he have time for. Dorvett, at twenty two was pleased to welcome his first child, Avriskai, a daughter. She had his black hair and pale skin and her mother’s pale gray eyes. He often said she was more beautiful than his own sister when she was a baby.
Kaskata took to being more helpful where her sister in law was concerned and welcomed the little baby with warmth that was unexpected. It seemed to everyone she had calmed down. Wild things can never stay quiet for long. Next thing he knew she was off riding runners that shouldn’t be ridden and taking unnecessary risks. Going on walks at night without a guard and not even taking a canine for protection. Often thoughts of something happening to her kept him up nights so he began to have her followed. Perhaps it was too late because she had been sneaking off to some clearing in the woods and meeting a man. The guard refused to tell exactly what he saw because he did not want to dishonor Kaskata.
That was when he had had to put her under house arrest. Dishonoring herself was one thing but such lewd behavior affected the entire family. Dorvett had no idea that he was too late. Nine months later the most beautiful baby was born illegitimately to his twenty turn old sister. It pained him to see his sister so dishonored. So they kept the girl’s birth quiet and pretended she was Oransis’ daughter and although Kaskata was permitted to feed and care for the baby it was not enough. The young woman was sad, to the point where no one could have helped her. She died. How and why were a mystery to Healers but Kalarue would always say it was her heart.
The little girl was playmates with her cousins and for a long time had no idea she was not the daughter of Oransis and Dorvett. Until one day, at age four they were getting dresses made for a Gather and a drudge made a noncommittal remark that made Kalarue look at herself next to her so called siblings. She looked nothing like them. Her hair was red where theirs was black; her eyes were the blue of the midnight sky whereas theirs was gray as rain. She was as tall as her two turn older sister Avriskai. So it was that she asked Oransis one day why she was so different. Oransis said to ask Dorvett, whom she had till that day called father. Dorvett decided the truth was best although he left out some parts of the story. All she knew was that she had no parents now and her uncle and aunt were going to take care of her.
Her cousins got along fine with her and though she was her mother’s daughter she was taught not to act on her emotions. Kalarue learned control so well that by the time she was seven one would of thought her a grown lady. She did not act like other children. It was almost like she had no personality except what she was permitted to be. The spirit inside of her was hidden and locked away because she feared becoming like her mother. Her uncle granted her whatever she wished though she was not his daughter. He loved her differently than his children but no less than them and no more than them. He was a good man and she would always hold to that no matter what anyone said of his treatment of her mother. He had been young and had no guidance in such matters. For her eighth birthing day she received something she had wanted for a long time. He had finally deemed her responsible enough to have her own canine. Westrion was the cutest puppy and though he had originally liked Dorvett the best, he soon bonded with Kalarue.
She had Westrion trained so well that when he was finally full grown he was always at her side. He was her own shadow and closest confidant. Although Kalarue was a bright young woman, she tended to grow tired of some subjects. Reading was all well and good but she much preferred doing something with her hands. Through the turns she had picked up on little phrases of gossip and though she had never known her mother, the words stung her. She knew a little more every turn and every turn grew more determined to be nothing like her mother. While growing up she learned only how to be lady and was never prepared for anything different. At thirteen she had received a very serious offer of marriage to a minor Holder but the man was much older and she was very scared of him. Dorvett refused the man, thankfully and said he was in no rush to marry off any of them.
Dorvett still takes care of them all and is training his eldest son Oranso to take the Lordship someday. Her place in the family is like that of a daughter and unless one were to see her one would never know by letters that she was anything but the daughter of Dorvett and his wife. She felt like their daughter and would never do the dishonor of calling them anything but her parents in public.
